Who else wants to banish the chore of cleaning up after kitty’s business? If you are like most cat owners, you know that cleaning the litter box is about as exciting as dental work. Thanks to an amazing new invention, it is now possible to both keep kitty’s box clean and germ free without the tedious constant chore of scooping and changing litter. An automatic cat litter box can handle all of the stinky work for you. These self cleaning litter pans have many benefits and are especially useful for busy families, the elderly and people with disabilities because they make caring for kitty easy and automatic.

The benefits of using a self cleaning cat box are many. First, you have to consider the odor control factor. If it were humanly possible to scoop up after each use of the litter box, it’s unlikely that you would ever have a problem with litter box smells. Unfortunately, most of us are entirely too busy to follow kitty’s every move and clean up immediately after every trip to the box. The automatic litter box is a tireless creation and most models run around the clock, cleaning waste after every use so you don’t have to. This makes for a significant decrease in smell coming from the litter box and may even make it possible to keep the box in places you otherwise wouldn’t want to.

Although every model is different most self cleaning litter boxes only need maintenance once a week to remove the waste from the storage area. They are typically easy to use and operate. Some brands use ordinary clumping litter that you can buy from any grocery or pet store, but others require you to use proprietary litter. When choosing a box, be sure to note what type of litter it takes as this can be a consideration in the overall cost.

There are a number of different automatic cat boxes on the market to choose from. The price of these units varies greatly and so do their functions. Even so, there is something for every need and budget. Most boxes are designed to accommodate households with multiple adult cats, so even if you have several kitties these will work for you.

The only drawback to most leading brands is that they all make some noise as they complete their cleaning cycle. If kitty needs to use the box during this time, they may initially have difficulty using the box with this noise. Fortunately over time most all cats adapt to the box and its noises and functions.

Overall, an automatic cat litter box is a worthwhile investment in your pets health and enviornment, plus its a simple way to make life a little bit easier on you. Many people who own these units would never go back to a traditional litter pan, so that tells you how indispensable a good self cleaning box can be.

Heart Rate – Frequently Asked Questions

Posted by Viliam Kanis in health

What is heart rate? Heart rate (HR) is an indicator of heart’s work and is calculated as number of heart contractions (beats) in one minute (beats per minute – bpm). Individual heart rate is very much influenced by physical fitness of the person, genetics, age and environment.

Heart rate reserve – what is it? Heart rate reserve is the difference between the maximum heart rate and so called resting heart rate. If your maximum heart rate is 200 beats per minute (bpm) and your resting heart rate is 60 bpm, then your heart rate reserve is 140 beats per minute (200 – 60). Trained people usually have larger heart rate reserve than those who do no sports.

What is recovery heart rate? Recovery heart rate is the decreased heart rate measured after period of time after the training. For example if your heart rate immediately after the training was 185 beats per minute (bpm) and after 2 minutes your heart rate decreased to 110 bpm, then the 110 bpm represents your recovery heart rate. Together with maximum heart rate, recovery heart rate also helps to determine the intensity of your training.

How does the heart rate decrease after training? The time that the heart needs to decrease its rate to resting rate is individual. Typically, trained people do have higher maximum heart rates, their heart can work longer with higher heart rates, their resting heart rate is lower then the heart rate of an untrained individual and they need less time to reach resting heart rate. With semitrained person, the heart rate drops at least 20 beats per minute (e.g. 180 bpm during the training, 140 bpm or less after 2 minutes).

What is resting heart rate? Resting heart rate represents number of heart beats in one minute while you are at rest. The resting heart rate is best measured if you did not perform any activity for at least 10 minutes (standing up from the chair is considered an activity!), ideally after waking up the natural way, without an alarm (an alarm signal causes stress in organism and results in an increased heart rate) still resting on the bed.

What is maximum heart rate? Maximum heart rate represents the highest number of heart contractions a person can bear. As maximum heart rate can be truly measured only during a moderated stress test under physician’s supervision, you can estimate your maximum heart rate using the following formula: Maximum heart rate = 220 – age (in years); That means that if your actual age is 34 years, your maximum heart rate would be 186 bpm (220 – 34). The maximum heart rate of a trained person is higher than the maximum heart rate of the less fit person~Trained people usually have higher maximum heart rate than those who are less fit.

What is normal heart rate? There is nothing like average normal heart rate. A typical resting heart rate of a medium conditioned man is approximately 70 bpm. Genetics and mostly the physical fitness play a significant role. The resting heart rate of a well conditioned sportsman can be as low as 40 bpm as a trained heart Works more effectively.

What is a safe heart rate during the training? If your heart is healthy (means you never suffered from a heart disease or a heart attack) the safe range would be 70-80% of your maximum heart rate. This doesnt apply to people who are in cardiac rehabilitation, their exercise heart rate is limited at maximum 50-60% of their maximum heart rate.

What is the difference between Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability? While heart rate refers to the number of times a heart contracts in one minute, heart rate variability refers to the beat-to-beat alterations in heart rate.

10 Ways to Prevent Home Accidents

Posted by Daniel Kane in health

If you ask almost anyone where they feel safest, they’ll say at home. Interestingly, though, your home is where you are most susceptible to injury. But, fortunately, most home accidents can be prevented.

Here are some steps you can take to avoid them.

1. Pay attention to lighting, both inside and outside of your home. In particular, be sure lighting is good in potentially hazardous areas like stairs, and in the path between your bedroom and the bathroom you use in the middle of the night.

2. Call an electrician immediately if you see any evidence of electrical problems. And, never leave an electrical heater on when you leave a room or are about to go to sleep. Doing so can be a fatal mistake.

3. Good smoke alarms are essential. Buy the very best and check them often. Also, practice the execution of emergency plans with your family, so they will react quickly and properly if and when you find yourselves in an emergency situation.

4. If there are children in your home, use portable gates in front of your stairways, plug unused electrical outlets, place scissors, knives and other sharp objects out of reach, and hide or lock away weapons, matches, and potentially dangerous chemical products.

5. Never allow strangers access to your home. Be certain that all home entry points are locked securely, whether you are at home or away.

6. Be sure that everyone in your family realizes that they should under no circumstances tell a stranger they are alone, or when your home will be unoccupied.

7. Homeowners are most at risk when doing maintenance and repair work, so always consider safety when working in your home or yard. Falls and power tools account for the bulk of in-home injuries.

8. Protect your hands by balling up your non-dominant hand when using a knife to chop or slice food. And, always use a tool…not your hand…if it is necessary to reach into any area where there are blades (lawn mower, disposal, etc.).

9. Park your car so that you can see small children or pets that may be in your path when you enter or exit the area in which you park. Or, do as I do; walk around your car before backing out of driveways, garages, and parking spaces. It may be a little inconvenient, but it is well worth the time and effort because it ensures that I will never injure a child or pet because I fail to see them.

10. Do not leave anything on stairs or in a position where it can fall onto stairs. Be vigilant about removing snow and ice from all areas in which people walk.

Of course, there is no way to entirely eliminate accidents. But, common sense precautions like those above wll go a long way to make life safer for you and your family.

Imagine, you’re driving on a motorway, and coming back from a family vacation or a business trip when suddenly you find yourself indulged in a motorway accident. While this is one of the most distressing situation that can happen to anyone, you need to know a few things to make sure you take the right steps at that time regarding your health, safety, and insurance information.

1. Stay calm. Calming down allows you to have a look around and figure out what actually happened. Get each person out of the vehicles, and make sure everyone is not badly wounded. If anyone is severely injured, call an ambulance. Call the police as well. Either you could use your cell phone, or a roadside emergency box for informing police or calling the ambulance.

2. If you could just warn the imminent traffic on both sides of the road about the accident s to be able to avoid further damage. Turn hazard lights on if they could still work, and in case they don’t work and your accident spot is around a curve, then move the vehicles away from the road if you can, or have someone stand before the curve to inform people.

3. If as a result of the accident there is leakage of petrol or any other fluids from the vehicle, shift people away from it right away as it could burst into flames. If somebody is in it, try and get them out of the vehicle, but not at the cost of your own life.

4. Do not move wounded people around unless there is possibility of a fire. There could be broken bones, internal bleeding, or any other thing that you could make worse by moving them. Leave them where they are, and wait for the ambulance.

5. If you are carrying a camera, take pictures of the cars so that these could be used as evidence for an insurance claim. Try to exchange information with the other driver, and make sure you keep in mind clear details of what exactly happened. Get the license plate number of the other car as well. Talk to the witnesses in order to get their names and numbers so that you are able to get hold of them afterwards if necessary. Do not admit fault or talk about the accident with the other driver involved, as anything you say could be used against you.

6. As the authorities are able to make it to the site, give them complete information leaving nothing out voluntarily. This would help them in making a report of all that happened. This report could be used as evidence in case of an insurance claim. Make sure that you are present at the site till this step is complete.

7. Once you get home, call up your insurance agent and tell him or her what happened. Send over pictures and a report of what happened, and meet up with them to discuss next steps. You will either file a claim with your own insurance company, or ask the other driver’s company to pay for your damages in case the accident was not your fault. Discuss this with you agent.

This information would help you in taking the right steps in case of an accident in order to stay safe and get possible compensation for it afterwards.

Rain Precautions at Craft Fairs

Posted by Bob Jones in Business

It’s a misconception that it’s always sunny in the Sunshine State of Florida. It is only called so because Florida happens to be one of the warmer areas in the United States. While it gets more sunlight there than in any other place in the US, Florida gets its fair share of typhoons that happen in all tropical climates.

Nevertheless, craft shows, along with the fairs and festivals in which they reside, go on. But what does this mean for the craft show booths that you rented? Well, what else? The show goes on. Surely you don’t plan on skipping a day of income just because of a bad weather!

But it would be foolish to sell your crafts at a fair and come unprepared. Water will inevitably damage, or worse, destroy, your goods. Take extra precautions so that your pieces won’t get wet. The next few paragraphs will explain some of the more common precautions that are normally brought to the table:

To prepare for possible rainfall, make sure that your crafts are not set on the floor, where no amount of plastic covering will protect it from the base. The event organizers give you a table, and it is best if you use it. Once it does rain, cover up your crafts with a thick plastic sheet. Any other waterproof material works, too, but do make sure that it doesn’t have any holes on it.

It’s not just about the rain, though. Bear in mind that typhoons will most likely have strong winds, and you will only be frustrated when said winds blow away the plastic sheets you meticulously covered your table and wares with. To prevent this, my suggestion would be to bring along heavy weights and clothesline clips and have them at the ready. In a pinch, heavy rocks will do just fine, just be sure to keep them close by.

Adult Acne: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Posted by Charles Carr in health

Although many people seem to think that acne is a problem for teens only, there are actually many people who end up dealing with acne during adulthood. This is known as adult acne. About 80% of all adults who are in their twenties and thirties end up dealing with some adult acne, and this is especially a big problem for women, who are the most commonly affected by acne as an adult. The type of acne that adults get is essentially the same as the acne seen in teenagers, but many times there are different causes for this type of acne. So, here’s a closer look at the causes of adult acne and ways to holistically treat it.

Causes of Adult Acne

Here are several causes of adult acne, particularly in women.

The Hormone Connection – When it comes to women, hormones are definitely a problem. Many women, because of hormone changes, suffer acne. This can happen during a women’s pregnancy, their menstrual cycle, or even when a woman stops taking birth control pills.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – Another cause that of adult acne in women is polycystic ovarian syndrome. Excessive production of male hormones is the source of this disorder. Because of the hormonal imbalances that occur with this medical problem, many women who suffer from it end up dealing with acne as well.

Medications and Chemicals — Some medications and chemicals can also cause adult acne. A variety of medications, such as epilepsy medication, anabolic steroids, medications that contain lithium, iodine, and rifampin, are known to cause acne in adults. Chlorine and other chemicals can also cause breakouts.

Pressure and Friction — friction and pressure on the skin, in some cases, can also cause acne. For example, Backpack and purse straps chafing the skin or objects, such as a violin, pressing against the face can cause acne.

Holistic Treatment of Adult Acne

If you are suffering from adult acne, treating it holistically is often your best choice. Surely, there are many acne medications available on the market, but many have bothersome side effects and others can cause additional problems. With these many side effects, it’s no wonder holistic treatments have gain in popularity in recent years. Holistic regiments can include eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water, eating plenty of whole grain and other low-glycemic foods, taking both herbal and vitamin supplements, like chlorophyll and echinacea are all helpful in treating acne.

Any plant that must be replaced every year and only has flowers one time, is an annual. Annuals are grown from seeds and the major advantage of an annual is the lower cost. Thousands of plants may be grown from just one seed packet.

Being decorative, annuals provide some very wonderful flowers for cutting.

The season for their bloom can be long, as well. The chief advantage is that the late day the bloom. If they are used alone or along a border, for a good part of the season will pass and you will still have color.

Annuals can also be used as a filler in between shrubbery and set some distance apart. This is so the shrubs can grow and not appear to stark.

To grow annuals, of course will be dependant upon which class they are a member of. The heartier flowers such as a larkspur or cornflower, can be planted in the late fall. The ground must be prepped just the same way it is in the spring time. Fall planting is advantageous because it gives you a leg up on spring planting. Certain other types of hearty annuals can also be sown in the spring time as soon as the ground thaws and warms up enough.

It is good to start some of the less hearty plants in seedling pots, or in a cold frame, you can start as early as March. These plants can not be placed out of doors until the danger of frost has passed. Outdoor planting must only be done after careful and complete soil preparation has been done. The flower bed must be pulverized and raked after it has been prepped and before planting, so all the lumps can be eliminated.

Seeds can be sowed broadcast in the part of the patch you select. Then they need to be lightly covered with soil. The soil should be gently stamped after is completely covered. The patch will need to be IDd with a stake and some sort of simple sign. Flower seeds need to be planted near the surface and in no instance should seeds be put more than one inch deep. The seeds from larger plants have strong growth potential (think sunflowers), need to be planted in mounds spaced about 2-4 feet apart.

Foliage plants are planted by color. But several people plant their outdoor annuals in rows, because it is easier when the garden is to be used for cuttings. To accomplish this, dig a shallow trench in the soil no more than an inch deep using a trowel or your fingers. Place the seeds in the trench and sow more seeds than you think you actually need and them trim out the rows after plants begin to grow. Thinning is most often required and is good for annual crops, because it makes each plant have sufficient room to grow.

One of the most shocking things one can do is transplant a plant, unless it is carefully done, the plant may be killed. It is a great idea to expose coldframes and potted seeds to the outdoors prior to transplanting, this prevents shock. All the soil in the coldframe or pot can then be used when its time to transplant.

The best time to transplant is when its cloudy and damp outside. If the soil is a bit dry, then simply watering before and after transplanting will suffice. If doing the transplant on a sunny day, then you will need to provide shade for the new transplanted plants. As soon as the plants have been established, the protective coverings can then be removed.

The Benefits of Tarot

Posted by Anne Ahira in Hobbies and Leisure

The beginning of Tarot cards is obscure plus unsolved! One description of the “true” history of the tarot links the cards to Egyptian mysteries, Hermetic philosophy, the Kabbalah, alchemy and almost every other mystical system recognized to mankind! What we do know surely is that cards first appeared in Italy and France in the late fourteenth century and that by the 15th century wealthy Italian patrons specially made beautiful decks to be used in a well-liked card game. Tarot cards finally became associated with the esoteric sometime in the 18th century.

Tarot is most commonly used for divination. It is believed that the cards can be used to gain insight into the current problems and possible future’s of the subject.

Some tarot readers believe the cards help them tap into a collective unconscious or into their own creative, subconscious while others feel that with tarot they can commune with the Divine.

Typically, a tarot reading involves a ’seeker’, who shuffles the cards and cuts the deck and a ‘reader’, who describes the selected cards in a prototype called a spread. Each position in the spread has a denotation, and all card has a diversity of symbolic denotations too. The reader comprehends how to figure out these cards and combines these two imports to shed light on the seeker’s matters.

Current tarot decks consist of 78 cards, of which 22 have images representing powers, characters, goodness, and vices. The remaining cards are divided into 4 ’suits’ of 14 cards each. Each suit has 10 numbered cards and four court cards (king, queen, knight, and page). The court cards may denote different people in a tarot reading , with each suit’s “nature” presenting hints about the person’s physical and emotional characteristics.

Today’s modern playing cards all evolved from these suit cards.
