Between the Internet, newspapers and television, you can usually find some good advice when you are thinking of buying something new. However much of the advice on buying a new tuxedo seems quite contradictory. One expert on fashion will be talking about the newest styles you must wear, while another will tell something completely different.
The problem is that most of these experts do not consider that we are individuals. Something that may look fabulous for one of us, my look atrocious when worn by someone else. Even if they have similar physical attributes, they will likely have a completely different personality.
The trick is to choose the suit that resonates with your personality. This is easier than it sounds. This means, for instance, that if you are a reserved sort of person, that you would not likely wish to put on a swanky tux with a lot of flashy appurtenances.
First, decide if you will be wearing the tuxedo mostly to the office or for the occasional social function, or both. If it’s both, choose a black tuxedo. It’s the most flexible. If it’s the office, choose a black or dark blue with optional pinstripe.
Next, decide if you are buying “off the peg” or made to measure. Off the peg will be quicker and easier, but it may not fit perfectly. Bespoke tuxedo’s are beautiful and will last longer, but are more expensive.
Thirdly, make your choice of material. If it is for summer wear for the most part, then select a lightweight fabric. Weighty wools like tweeds are more suited to leaner bodies, and to the colder seasons or more frigid climes.
The style must be considered. The single breasted tuxedo can be worn anywhere, but the double breasted is making a big comeback. It has a classic elegance, but you need to be a confident character to wear it.
Fifthly, remember to coordinate the tie with the shirt. If you have chosen a black tux for an office gathering, combine a dark tie with a crisp white shirt. If you are dressing for a social event, the shirt can have a tasteful pattern while, in some cases, the tie can be eschewed altogether.
Lastly, consider bringing a friend or partner to offer their opinion. This is very important as you want the tuxedo that you purchase to be one that actually looks great, not one that you thought looked great.
